We said it in a previous post, How NOT to Find a Product Supplier You Can Trust, but it must be said again… When you want to import products to sell online:
- Assume nothing – all the time!
- Take nothing for granted – all the time!
- Be skeptical – all the time!
Now, as we promised, it’s time to address a few of the most frequent misconceptions about finding an importer to help you bring your products into the US, after you’ve found a supplier by NOT relying only on Alibaba “Gold Suppliers” or depending on ISO “certified” suppliers.
Again, these are things we hear on a regular basis that lets us know there may be a problem on the near horizon:
- “I’m working with a manufacturer that only works with American companies, so they know the ins-and-outs of exporting into the USA. I’m safe.”
Wrong… exporting and importing are NOT the same thing. Many times, the exporting factories are unaware of the tariff codes or the antidumping rules for your country. ALWAYS do your own research, and make sure you have a US customs official on your team to help you understand and comply with US laws and regulations. We have seen too many times fees and fines put many Amazon companies out of business.

- “Importing isn’t that tough, anyone can do it. In fact, I found a supplier on Alibaba who can take care of everything for me, even dealing with US customs.”
Sure, go ahead and flip a coin on that one… IF you want to take the chance. Very few foreign companies, whether they call themselves a “supplier”, “manufacturer” or Broker”, have the knowledge and experience with US customs laws and regulations to do this for you. ALWAYS do your own homework, and make sure you do not rely on the manufacturer. After all, they have a vested interest in encouraging you to buy from them, whether they know anything about importing to the US or not.
If they file YOUR paperwork incorrectly, put in the wrong tariff codes, don’t know the rules and regulations of US customs, and/or don’t disclose all the truth and costs, you could be liable to pay TONS of HUGE fines. And create a nightmare of a situation everyone is trying to avoid.
- “If I split my shipment of $1500 up so that it will be two shipments, they’ll each be under the $800 free-duty limit. That way, I save the cost of duty on those shipments.”
OMG… Doing that is ILLEGAL! According to US Customs, they are really starting to crack down on Amazon sellers importing frequent shipments that are valued under the $800 free-duty threshold. Beware, and play it safe. This comes straight from US customs: “Exemption is not allowed if CBP believes that the shipment is one of several lots covered by a single order or contract, and that it was sent separately for the express purpose of securing free entry or for the purpose of avoiding compliance with any pertinent law or regulation.” Yeah, kind of sounds like what you just said, doesn’t it?
Yes, we realize that compliance with the laws and regulations for importing products to sell online can be time consuming, energy draining, and expensive – BUT – being fined or prosecuted for non-compliance can cost you much, much more – perhaps even your freedom.
